Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells, or IPSCs, can be used to regrow the corneal endothelium, a layer of cells located on the inner surface of the cornea. These stem cells are unique in that they can be programmed to differentiate into corneal endothelium cells by genetically modifying them so that they replicate only when they detect signal proteins unique to that of the corneal endothelium. However, if they fail to detect the signal proteins, they will undergo cell death.
